John McLaren is an Honorary Research Fellow at Glasgow University and a researcher at the Centre for Public Policy for Regions (CPPR). He is also an economic consultant and commentator.

Earlier in his career he was a Special Adviser to the First Minister of Scotland and an Economic Adviser at both the Scottish Office and H.M Treasury.
