Cards are a bad IDea - 25.01.08

Speaking in Glasgow at the launch of the Scottish Conservative campaign against Labour’s ID cards, Annabel Goldie MSP, Scottish Conservative Leader, said:

“Despite what Gordon Brown and the Labour Government says, ID cards won’t stop terrorist attacks and won’t prevent identity fraud. Hardworking Scots will each have to fork out almost £100 for this total invasion of personal privacy, and on top of that they will have to travel to a biometric scan centre in order to have their biometrics taken.

“Every time you move, change details, get married or have children you will have to inform the Government’s database. Failure to do so could incur fines of up to £1,000. Every time there is a mistake on the system you will have to prove it wrong not the other way round. You will not be able to access public services if you have left the card at home and every time you visit the doctor, council or police the system will record your visit. Your life will no longer be your own.”

David Mundell MP, Shadow Secretary of State for Scotland, who launched the campaign with Annabel, said:“I am right behind David Cameron and Annabel Goldie as they lead the fight across the UK against Labour’s ID cards. Scottish Conservatives believe we should live in a free country. Labour want to know every step you take, every move you make. If Labour gets its way, Big Brother will be watching you.”
